India made its diplomatic power felt at the G7 Summit. As soon as Prime Minister Modi reached the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge in Alberta, Canada, a different seriousness was seen in the atmosphere there. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney himself went ahead and welcomed him – this is not just a courtesy, but also an indication of India’s growing stature.
This is Modi’s sixth consecutive G7 Summit, and every time his presence seems to strengthen India’s global role. This time too his agenda is quite busy – meetings with the world’s top leaders and presenting India’s view on important international issues.
It is clear that now India is not only present at the global discussion table, but has also become an influential stakeholder.

India-Canada relations
India-Canada relations saw a significant decline during Justin Trudeau’s tenure. In September 2023, tensions between the two countries escalated significantly when then Prime Minister Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder of pro-Khalistan Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India categorically denied these allegations. The situation worsened so much that both countries had to expel many of their diplomats, which further soured bilateral relations.
The bitterness in relations between India and Canada now seems likely to reduce. During this conference, Prime Minister Modi met many important leaders and shared his views on global issues. Most importantly, the bilateral talks between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are expected to remove the bitterness in the relations between the two countries. Now it remains to be seen how much real progress is made in the relations after this meeting.
The Ministry of External Affairs
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders agreed that it is necessary to pursue a balanced and constructive partnership with mutual respect and understanding. It was also decided that dialogue should be resumed at the level of senior ministers and officials in various fields, so that mutual trust is strengthened and bilateral relations gain new momentum.
Consensus reached on resuming negotiations on EPTA
There has been a consensus between the two countries on resuming the stalled negotiations on EPTA. Also, it has been decided to move forward towards the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both the leaders have instructed their respective officials to start further negotiations soon.
During the G7 summit, both the leaders underlined the important progress and expressed commitment to work together on global issues like climate change, inclusive growth, and sustainable development. Apart from this, there was also a consensus on further deepening the strong public relations between India and Canada, so that the interests of both the countries can be further promoted.
