Floods in Bihar are once again showing their terrible form, meaning the situation has really become very bad. The water level in most rivers including Ganga is rising rapidly. The roads to villages in many districts have disappeared, people are yearning to come and go. Due to compulsion, people have left their homes and started looking for some higher place.
Patna
The impact of floods is being felt widely in Patna district—about one lakh people are affected. About 90,500 people in 14 panchayats of Athmalgola, Mokama, Barh, Danapur and Patna Sadar blocks have been directly affected. The district administration has operated six community kitchen centers as part of relief work, where food has been provided to about 17,200 people so far. Apart from this, two flood relief camps are being operated, in which accommodation and food have been arranged for 1,130 people. Dry ration and polythene sheets have also been distributed by the administration to needy families.
Sheikhpura
Due to the rapid rise in the water level of the Ganges, a serious flood situation has arisen in many districts of Bihar. The Harhar river, a tributary of the Ganges in Sheikhpura area, is also in full spate, due to which a large population of Ghatkusumbha block is surrounded by floods from all sides. Citizens have to resort to boats for daily activities. Water has entered many houses, due to which people have had to take shelter on the roofs of their houses.
Jawainiya
In Jawainiya village, every household is in danger due to the erosion of the Ganga river. This village in Shahpur block of Bhojpur, which was once prosperous, is now affected by continuous erosion. Local people are being forced to leave their homes and settle in other places. Similarly, the situation is not better in the Diara region of Patna—vegetable crops have been submerged in flood water, causing huge losses to the farmers.
Looking at the current situation, the situation in Jawainiya village remains serious. Local MLA Rahul Tiwari has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Water Power Minister CR Patil demanding immediate intervention on this issue. The letter mentions that more than 100 houses have been submerged in the river so far due to erosion of the Ganges river in Jawainiya village of Shahpur block, Bhojpur. The rescue efforts made by the state government are not proving to be sufficient.
The MLA has demanded that pitching and bouldered erosion prevention work should be started immediately from Nauranga in Uttar Pradesh to Jawainiya village, so that the remaining population and property of the village can be kept safe. Now it remains to be seen how quickly and effectively the central government takes steps in this direction.
Bhagalpur
Bhagalpur and surrounding areas are facing a serious flood situation, especially due to the sudden rise in water level in the Ganga river. The relief is that the situation is now expected to improve. The water level of the Ganga is expected to decrease from Monday evening, as all 101 gates of the Farakka Barrage have been opened. This will help in restoring normalcy in the affected areas and the local administration will speed up relief work.
Farrukhabad (Uttar Pradesh)
The situation in Farrukhabad is really serious. Many villages have been submerged due to floods in Uttar Pradesh and people are forced to leave their homes. The number of deaths due to drowning is constantly increasing, which has increased the concern even more. Earlier Yamuna had caused havoc, now the water level of Ganga has also engulfed many areas. Especially in Farrukhabad – here 49 villages have been submerged due to the rising water level of Ganga. As a result, 50 schools have had to be closed temporarily. In these circumstances, the challenge of relief and rehabilitation has increased even more in front of the local administration.
